How Fine Hair Can Benefit from Hair Oils

Most women with fine hair tend to steer clear of hair oils, and for a perfectly fair reason: The greasy conditioner more often than not weighs down already limp strands. Yet with winter sucking out all moisture—from the dry air to indoor heat to mandatory blow drying sessions, there’s little left—fine hair can use all the moisturizing help it can get. When leave-in and wash-out conditioners just won’t cut it, finding the right hair oil and using it correctly may be just the key.

“Oils can rescue hair that has been damaged by the environment and are ideal during harsh seasons, especially during the winter,” says Ivan Torres of Ricardo Rojas Atelier—and yes, even on fine hair. “The key when using oils,” Torres says, “is to find the right one for your hair type.” To get rich moisture without weighing down hair, Torres recommends looking for products with argan, coconut, avocado, grape seed, or camellia oil. “All of these ingredients will add a weightless sheen and give that healthy look we all crave for our hair,” he says.

Even with these lighter concentrations, remember that less is generally more. With fine hair, either apply the oil while hair is still damp (it will also work as a heat protectant before blow drying), as an overnight treatment that’s washed out in the A.M. before shampooing, or as a spot treatment for especially dry or frizzy strands. Just add a few drops to your fingertip and then lightly dab at unruly sections, particularly the ends of hair, where it tends to be the driest.
